After nearly a decade, Lake Balaton has done something magical again — it has frozen over.
Lake Balaton in winter.
For the first time in 9 years, temperatures dipped below -10°C for two consecutive weeks, creating a rare and breathtaking winter scene across the region. At our vacation homes in Balatonakarattya, the snow-covered garden, the frozen lake, and the crisp winter sun turned the whole landscape into something out of a fairy tale.

A Balatonakarattya Microclimate Surprise
Interestingly, our little corner of Balaton is known for its milder microclimate — often a few degrees warmer than the surrounding towns. That's why it was even more special to see thick snow and the lake freezing up right in front of the villas.

Despite the icy conditions, a few open patches of water remained near the shore, and ducks happily paddled about, unfazed by the frost.
Locals Return to the Ice
As the surface thickened, a few brave souls dusted off their skates and began walking — even skating — on the frozen lake, especially near Siófok and protected bays. We always advise caution, but there's something truly magical about watching people glide over the same water that hosts boats and sunbathers in summer.

Summer May Be Our Season — But Winter Has Its Charm
Although our properties are closed for the winter, we couldn’t resist sharing this rare moment with our guests and future visitors. It reminds us that Lake Balaton is not just a summer destination, but a year-round natural wonder.
We’re already preparing for the 2026 season and can’t wait to welcome you back when the sun returns — though we must admit, Balaton in white has stolen our hearts just a little.
Until then, stay warm!– Tamas, Balatonakarattya Vacation Homes
